chinatown, nyc

One of the items on our list of must-sees while in the city was Chinatown. I think it is fair to say that neither of us really knew what to expect. I knew it would be overwhelming and colorful, and really that was about all I knew 🙂

I was in for a surprise….Chinatown is so far beyond overwhelming. I am not a huge crowd person…when I saw the upcoming crowds I was ready to do a quick turn and head the other way! We saw two Chinatowns; the tourist version, and the real version. The tourist version is a constant flow of people. Tight crowds. t-shirts and hats and scarves and everything in between. If you pay close attention, you will notice unassuming women walking through the crowd quietly announcing Gucci and Coach and everything in between. The tourist version was quite overwhelming and you will see no photos of that version because, well, I was too overwhelmed 😉

And then we kept walking. And we found ourselves in a realer version of Chinatown. Suddenly I realized I was not hearing as much English being spoken. Suddenly I couldn’t understand the street signs. The food being sold was unrecognizable. THIS was Chinatown!

and one of my favorite photos from the whole trip….
